German Minister of the Interior Faeser Plans Sippenhaft Revival

Prohibitions on Family Members of Convicts

Interior Minister Considers Stricter Measures

In a controversial move, German Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser is reportedly considering a return to the practice of Sippenhaft, or "kinship liability," which would extend punishments to family members and relatives of convicted criminals.

Under Sippenhaft, which was abolished in Germany after World War II, family members of prisoners could face restrictions on their freedom of movement, employment opportunities, and even access to social services. Critics argue that such measures would violate basic human rights and could have devastating consequences for innocent people.
